September 2010

Participate in the 2011 Corobrik-ILASA Awards of Excellence

Entries for the 2011 Corobrik-ILASA Awards of Excellence opened at the beginning of September. The deadline for the submission of entry forms is 17 November 2010 and the information packs providing details of the entries must reach ILASA no later than 1 December.

ILASA is hopeful that its members will enter projects en masse as the primary purpose of the staging of this programme is to promote the profession of landscape architecture. The more projects entered, the more impressive the awards magazine and audio-visual presentations will be. More entries will also attract wider media coverage.

ILASA members are encouraged to seriously consider entering the awards – it is not about receiving an award of excellence, but about contributing to the archive of work available to the institute for use in marketing the profession.

The entry forms and criteria are available on ILASA’s website – see www.ilasa.co.za

Date for awards function confirmed

The presidential suite of the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban will be the venue for the 2011 Corobrik-ILASA Awards of Excellence function. The event is scheduled for 21 May 2011. Be sure to reserve this date in your diary and remember to book flights early to avoid unnecessary costs.

Avis has come on board as ILASA’s preferred car rental supplier for the awards weekend in Durban and members can book vehicles and offset their carbon emissions at the same time. Details of the weblink to the Avis booking page will be disclosed in the next news letter.

Biomimicry lecture worth attending

ILASA members Carl Pretorius and Bruce Stewart of Just Trees are hosting a biomimicry lecture at their nursery near Paarl on 16 October 2010. Claire Janisch of Biomimicry South Africa will be the guest speaker. Janisch is a biomimicry professional having recently completed the two-year biomimicry masters programme of The Biomimicry Institute. She also holds a masters degree in chemical engineering; specialising in the field of environmental process engineering.

The event should be of special interest to ILASA members as biomimicry looks toward nature to provide innovative and progressive solutions to design challenges. A tour of the Just Trees nursery will also be offered. ILASA members will also be able to accrue CPD points by attending as the event will be listed as one of ILASA’s preferred CPD events for the year on its schedule to be submitted to SACLAP in the near future.

Popular urban design book being updated

The publishers of Responsive Environments – first published in 1985 – intend to produce a revised edition. “The book has been very influential internationally, but until now has never been revised. Its principles remain as relevant as ever, and we know from our international contacts that they are useful around the world. We have been aware for a long time, however, that the first edition has become very dated in its image, is very Eurocentric and is largely illustrated through traditional places and buildings. We are working on a new edition which gives the opportunity to show the book’s principles being used in a wide range of modern and international examples,” writes the publishers.

UCT offers masters in conservation of the built environment

The University of Cape Town has opened enrolments for its Master of Philosophy in Conservation of the Built Environment degree. “Professionals and managers working in The Built Environment are increasingly being required to conserve or take account of heritage and heritage resources. This programme aims to produce graduates with the necessary knowledge, values and skills to engage effectively with the challenges arising in the very diverse multidisciplinary, intellectual, cultural and physical environments where heritage and heritage resources are present. The programme curriculum is cross-disciplinary and exposes students to the broad range of research, analytical, evaluative, planning and management issues and challenges they are likely to encounter in the field.

The programme is designed for working professionals and is offered in the part-time block-release system of four one-week contact periods in the first year and two one-week contact periods plus a research project in the second year.

The programme commences in February 2011 and the closing date for applications is 30 November 2010. Contact Stephen Townsend on 021 650 4417 or e-mail ss.townsend@uct.ac.za.

Sponsorship growth

ILASA is excited about the number of sponsors it has signed up for the 2010/2011 financial year. Highlights of this year’s programme will include the 2011 Corobrik-ILASA Awards of Excellence, the preparations for the 2012 IFLA World Congress in Cape Town, various CPD events and the preparation of a roadmap for transformation of the landscape architectural profession, including a focus on bursaries.

Sponsors who have already signed up are:

Patrons: Beka, Corobrik, Johannesburg City Parks, Top Turf, Urban Green File

Company sponsors: Aurecon, Blueprint, CMAI, DDV, EPLA, Green Inc, Insite, Interdesign, Habitat, Landmark, MALA, NLA, OvP, Red, the landscape studio and Viridian

Associate-company sponsors: Arid Earth Solutions

Supplier sponsors: Just Trees

Institutional sponsors: BEPEC

Event-specific sponsors: Corobrik and Avis

With ILASA’s financial year running until July 2011 and with the main event in the Corobrik-ILASA Awards of Excellence still to take place, sponsors will have plenty of publicity opportunities. It is therefore not yet too late to become an ILASA sponsor.
